
The MOHS Scale ranks minerals on a scale of 1 to 10, with each level representing a specific mineral’s hardness. For example, talc is rated as 1 (softest), while diamond is rated as 10 (hardest). When testing aggregates, their hardness is compared against reference minerals from the MOHS scale by attempting to scratch the surface of the aggregate with a known hardness material. If the reference material scratches the aggregate, it is softer than the reference; if not, it is harder.


Aggregates with higher hardness on the MOHS scale are more resistant to abrasion, which improves the performance and lifespan of construction materials. Testing ensures that aggregates will not degrade under heavy loads, weather conditions, or repeated traffic, contributing to the safety, efficiency, and durability of structures. By using the MOHS scale, engineers can optimize material selection, enhance construction quality, and minimize long-term maintenance costs.
